Advocacy

Need Support in Understanding Your Care or Expressing Your Needs?

If you ever feel unsure about your treatment options or find it difficult to explain what you need, help is available.

An advocate can guide you through the care process, ensure your views are listened to, and, if necessary, speak on your behalf. They can help you with decision-making, raise concerns when something doesn’t feel right, or simply provide someone to talk to about how you feel regarding your care.

Advocates work independently and are not part of The Neuro Medical Group.

What is Advocacy?

In healthcare, advocacy means having someone by your side to:

  • Make sure your voice is heard in important matters
  • Help you understand your rights
  • Protect and support those rights
  • Ensure your wishes and opinions are considered in your care

How an Advocate Can Help You

An advocate may provide practical support, such as:

  • Attending appointments with you
  • Writing letters or emails on your behalf
  • Assisting with planning for care and treatment

Getting an Advocate Through Your Local Council

If you don’t have family or friends to support you, your local council is required to provide an advocate. You can contact your council’s social services department and ask about their advocacy services.

Other Advocacy Organisations

There are several independent charities that can also provide advocacy support:

  • POhWER – A charity working across England in over 100 local authority areas, offering statutory and non-statutory advocacy services. Call 0300 456 2370.
  • SeAp Advocacy – Provides help in resolving concerns and making sure you have a say in your care. Call 0330 440 9000 or text SEAP to 80800.
  • VoiceAbility – Offers advocacy services across many regions. Call 01223 555800 or check for local contact details on their website.
