ADHD is a ‘neurodevelopmental’ disorder which can affect a number of areas of brain function. With understanding, care and holistic treatment, people with ADHD can be successfully supported to improve their quality of life. Children and Adults with ADHD may experience difficulties with:

For you to have ADHD, the symptoms have to be severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of your life. As you grow older, diagnosing ADHD becomes more difficult because some of the symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as anxiety or depression. This makes getting an ADHD assessment as soon as possible vital for an accurate diagnosis.
We gather family, medical and neurodevelopmental history through our standardised questionnaires during the screening process.
Then we meet you for a feedback session for around 60 mins (face to face or online) where we gather additional information and go through the findings of the questionnaires and decide next steps.
If the decision is to continue with the ADHD pathway, we continue with the next phase in the pathway…
You will meet a Consultant for the Diva Assessment which lasts around 90 -120 mins. This focuses on the type of ADHD existent and behaviour now in relation to childhood. The details are passed onto the specialist for your diagnosis appointment. This appointment is face to face or online.
You will meet the Psychiatrist or a Consultant Clinical Psychologist for a 60 minute appointment who will assess whether you meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis, and may ask you further questions. Treatment plans can then be discussed at an additional cost. A comprehensive report will follow with next steps and recommendations.

Understanding what ADHD is and what it is not is an important step in your treatment process. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that influences how the brain regulates attention, impulse control, motivation, and emotional responses. ADHD is not a sign of laziness, lack of intelligence, or poor upbringing. Individuals living with ADHD have differences in how certain areas of the brain function and communicate.
When you have ADHD, you may find it challenging to maintain focus, complete tasks, manage time effectively, or regulate emotional reactions. These challenges can affect academic performance, professional life, relationships, and overall well-being. Because ADHD presents differently from one person to another, it often goes unnoticed and is often misunderstood.
Recognising ADHD as a neurological condition is an important step toward appropriate assessment and meaningful support.
Diagnosing ADHD involves a detailed clinical process rather than a simple test or checklist. A qualified clinician evaluates whether an individual’s experiences align with established diagnostic criteria, taking into account both past and current functioning.
The assessment process includes structured clinical interviews, validated diagnostic questionnaires, and a review of developmental history. Clinicians explore how symptoms have affected multiple areas of life over time, such as education, work, and social relationships.
Careful evaluation is essential because ADHD can overlap with other conditions, such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and learning differences. A thorough diagnostic approach ensures clarity and reduces the risk of misdiagnosis.
ADHD is commonly described using three recognised presentations, based on how symptoms predominantly appear.
This type of ADHD is characterised by difficulty concentrating, frequent distraction, forgetfulness, and poor organisational skills. Others present with
This type has symptoms which may include restlessness, difficulty remaining still, or acting without considering consequences.
This is the most common type of ADHD, where both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive characteristics are present.
During assessment, it is critical to identify the specific presentation to help guide appropriate management strategies and support recommendations.
An ADHD diagnosis can provide valuable insight and relief, particularly for individuals who have spent years feeling misunderstood or frustrated by their own difficulties. It offers an explanation rooted in neuroscience rather than personal failure.
A formal diagnosis can also enable access to appropriate support, including medical treatment, psychological therapies, workplace adjustments, or academic accommodations. Without diagnosis, individuals may continue to struggle without targeted strategies or recognition of their needs.
Beyond practical benefits, diagnosis often helps individuals reframe their life experiences with greater self-compassion and understanding.
When considering an ADHD assessment, many individuals weigh the options between private and NHS services. NHS assessments are comprehensive but often involve long waiting times due to high demand and limited resources.
Private ADHD assessments offer faster access, allowing individuals to receive evaluation and feedback without extended delays. They also tend to provide longer consultation sessions, enabling clinicians to explore symptoms and history in greater depth.
Private assessments often include detailed written reports and clearer follow-up guidance, which can be particularly helpful for those seeking structured next steps after diagnosis.
Booking a private ADHD assessment in Chester with The Neuro Medical Group is designed to be clear and straightforward. The process begins with an initial enquiry, during which our team explains the assessment pathway and answers any questions.
Once an appointment is scheduled, you will receive information on how to prepare and what to expect. Appointments are arranged with flexibility in mind, ensuring minimal disruption to your daily routine.
From first contact to post-assessment feedback, our team prioritises confidentiality, professionalism, and open communication.
During your ADHD assessment, you will meet with a clinician experienced in neurodevelopmental conditions. The session focuses on understanding your individual experiences rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
You will discuss current challenges, early developmental history, educational or occupational experiences, and how symptoms affect daily life. Standardised assessment tools are used alongside clinical judgement to ensure accuracy and consistency.
Following the assessment, we explain the findings clearly, and you will receive a comprehensive written report. This report outlines diagnostic conclusions and provides personalised recommendations tailored to your circumstances.
An ADHD assessment is not an endpoint, but a starting point for informed decision-making. Depending on the outcome, next steps may include exploring treatment options, implementing practical strategies, or accessing additional support services.
