ADHD is a ‘neurodevelopmental’ disorder which can affect a number of areas of brain function. With understanding, care and holistic treatment, people with ADHD can be successfully supported to improve their quality of life. Children and Adults with ADHD may experience difficulties with:

For you to have ADHD, the symptoms have to be severe enough to cause ongoing problems in more than one area of your life. As you grow older, diagnosing ADHD becomes more difficult because some of the symptoms are similar to those caused by other conditions, such as anxiety or depression. This makes getting an ADHD assessment as soon as possible vital for an accurate diagnosis.
We gather family, medical and neurodevelopmental history through our standardised questionnaires during the screening process.
Then we meet you for a feedback session for around 60 mins (face to face or online) where we gather additional information and go through the findings of the questionnaires and decide next steps.
If the decision is to continue with the ADHD pathway, we continue with the next phase in the pathway…
You will meet a Consultant for the Diva Assessment which lasts around 90 -120 mins. This focuses on the type of ADHD existent and behaviour now in relation to childhood. The details are passed onto the specialist for your diagnosis appointment. This appointment is face to face or online.
You will meet the Psychiatrist or a Consultant Clinical Psychologist for a 60 minute appointment who will assess whether you meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis, and may ask you further questions. Treatment plans can then be discussed at an additional cost. A comprehensive report will follow with next steps and recommendations.
Costings are in two parts.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the brain’s ability to regulate attention, behaviour, and impulse control. ADHD is not caused by poor discipline or lack of effort. Instead, it is linked to structural and chemical differences in brain regions that manage executive function, emotional regulation, and attention.
ADHD can affect both children and adults. It becomes more noticeable in children during school years when tasks requiring focus become more demanding. In adults, ADHD may present as ongoing difficulty when managing responsibilities, maintaining long-term focus, or staying organised.
These symptoms can vary widely, making diagnosis difficult and requiring a structured clinical assessment to accurately identify the condition.
ADHD presents in different ways depending on factors like age, environment and also varies from person to person. Symptoms generally fall into two categories: inattentive symptoms and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. The severity, pattern, and impact of these symptoms determine which type of ADHD a person may have.
Common symptoms of inattentive ADHD include difficulty concentrating, losing items frequently, struggling to follow instructions, forgetfulness, poor organisation, and challenges completing tasks. These symptoms often present as daydreaming or easy distraction.
Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD symptoms can include restlessness, fidgeting, excessive talking, impatience, difficulty waiting for turns, acting without thinking, or always feeling ready to go. Adults may describe this as persistent inner restlessness rather than apparent hyperactivity. The third category draws from both types of ADHD and is called the combined type.
There are three recognised types of ADHD:
ADHD can only be diagnosed through clinical assessment because there’s no single test that can accurately diagnose ADHD.
The diagnostic process typically includes:
The assessment looks at how symptoms have developed over time and how they affect daily functioning. This comprehensive approach ensures that the diagnosis is accurate, clinically appropriate, and supported by clear evidence.
After the assessment, we will provide you with a full diagnostic report detailing the clinicians’ findings and conclusions. We can also provide you with resources and support, including next steps.
Both NHS and private assessments follow clinical guidelines, but there are several key differences in the experiences you can expect from either option.
NHS assessments are thorough and reliable, but due to high demand, waiting lists are often lengthy. You may have to wait months or even years before being seen, which can lead to significant delays in accessing treatment or support to improve your life and functioning.
For families with children struggling at school or adults facing work-related challenges, these delays can be particularly stressful and can lead to even more adverse outcomes for you due to the symptoms.
Private ADHD assessments provide significantly faster access. At Neuro Medical Group, assessments in Milton Keynes can typically be arranged without long waiting periods, allowing individuals to receive answers and support sooner.
Private assessments also offer greater appointment flexibility and more time with clinicians, allowing for a deeper, more personalised evaluation. The diagnostic report from a private assessment is comprehensive and can often be used to assess workplace adjustments, school support, or treatment pathways, depending on local policies.
Another key difference between private and NHS ADHD assessments is the level of follow-up guidance. Private assessments tend to provide more detailed recommendations, helping individuals understand their diagnosis and the options available to them. This can be particularly valuable for parents trying to support a child or adults navigating ADHD for the first time.
Neuro Medical Group specialises in ADHD assessments carried out by experienced clinicians who understand the full range of ADHD presentations in both children and adults. Our approach is detailed, compassionate, and grounded in clinical best practice, using certified and approved tools and practices.
